Arginine – Precursor of Nitric Oxide (NO)
What is Arginine?
L-arginine is a semi-essential amino acid – the body can fundamentally synthesize it itself, but under certain conditions (intense training, illness, rapid growth), demand exceeds endogenous production. Arginine is primarily known in sports nutrition as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO).
Nitric Oxide: The Core of its Effect
Arginine is converted to NO and citrulline by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NO is a gaseous signaling molecule with various effects:
- Vasodilation: NO relaxes the smooth muscles of blood vessel walls and widens them – better blood flow, lower blood pressure
- Pump effect: More blood in the muscles = more nutrient supply and the characteristic "pump" during training
- Mitochondrial function: NO regulates mitochondrial biogenesis and oxygen utilization
- Immune function: NO has antibacterial and antiviral effects
The Problem with Oral Arginine
Orally administered arginine has poor bioavailability. Approximately 40-50% is metabolized by intestinal cells and the liver before reaching the systemic circulation. This explains why citrulline (an indirect arginine precursor) is more effective as an NO booster: citrulline is more efficiently converted to arginine in the kidneys and bypasses first-pass metabolism.
| Comparison | Arginine | Citrulline |
|---|---|---|
| Oral Bioavailability | ~50-68% | ~80% |
| Plasma Arginine Increase | Lower | Higher (paradoxical) |
| Pump Effect | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Recommendation | Conditional | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Better |
Other Functions of Arginine
Arginine is not just an NO precursor. It also plays a role in the urea cycle (detoxification of ammonia), promotes the release of growth hormone and insulin (especially post-workout), and is involved in collagen synthesis (wound healing).
Dosage
| Application | Dose | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-workout NO-Boost | 3–6 g | 30–60 min before workout |
| Blood Pressure Support | 3–6 g | Divided throughout the day |
| Growth Hormone Stimulation | 5–9 g | Fasting |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Arginine or Citrulline better as a pre-workout?
Citrulline is clearly superior for NO booster effects. Most modern pre-workout formulas have replaced arginine with citrulline. However, arginine has its own advantages (growth hormone, urea cycle).
Can Arginine lower blood pressure?
In people with slightly elevated blood pressure, studies show moderate blood pressure reductions with arginine. Not a substitute for medication, but a useful supplement.
